What is a Diamond?
A diamond is incredibly rare – in all of human history, only 500 tons of diamonds have ever been mined. (Put into perspective, about 175,000 tons of gold have been mined in the same time frame.) A diamonds’s structure makes this fascinating gem the hardest naturally occurring material on earth.
A diamond is cherished, a diamond is love — a diamond is everlasting.
The 4 C’S – Colour, Clarity, Cut, & Carat Weight
GIA’s colour grading system begins with the letter D, representing colourless, and continues with increasing colour, to the letter Z.
GIA’s clarity grading is made up of 6 different grading levels:
- Flawless (FL): No Inclusions or Blemishes
- Internally Flawless (IF): No Inclusions
- Very Very Slight (VVS): Inclusions So Slight Very Difficult to See
- Very Slight (VS): Difficult to See But Considered Minor
- Slightly Included (SI): Inclusions are Noticeable
- Included (I): Inclusions are Obvious
*All graded at 10% magnification
GIA’s cut grading scale consists of 5 different cut grading levels.
- Very Good
Based on its brightness, scintillation and polish, a diamond’s even patterns of bright and dark will determine its cut grading. Cut is technically the most challenging grading to analyze.
GIA’s carat weight grading is measured in points or carats. For instance, 0.25 would be described as a ’25 pointer’; 1.00 would be described as ‘one point zero zero’ or ‘one carat’.
