The prosperity bag is one of the oldest symbols of abundance in Chinese tradition. This one took considerably longer to make than most.
The entire body of this pendant is openwork filigree, each tendril of gold drawn and placed by hand into a continuous field of scrolling lacework. At the center, a lotus motif is set with 115 natural diamonds in pavé, the brilliance of the stones emerging from within the filigree rather than sitting above it. A lotus crown forms the bail, completing the botanical composition at its highest point. The piece is voluminous in form but built from negative space, gold and air in equal measure. At 20.283g it carries the weight of pure 24K antique gold while appearing lighter than that weight suggests. This is filigree at the level the 1848 Collection was built to represent.
Part of the 1848 Collection, where the highest standard of gold artistry meets the deepest registers of Chinese cultural meaning.
