The hulu, or gourd, has long been carried in Chinese tradition as a symbol of health and protection, its rounded shape said to gather good fortune within. Here it sits cut open at the center of a circular frame, scrolling filigree curling around it, a line of diamonds tracing the inner edge where the gourd's silhouette meets the gold.
